@Kabuchan, I have a Gateway 2-Wire AIO router & Modem. On my Vista X64 drive, Windows firewall is enabled & I am having no problems that way. I just wanted the 2-way firewall instead of Windows, but it doesn't look like Net Defense will operate in 64bit.

@aaron here, the only thing I can think of is that the Vista laptop wants all or most of the bandwith.

@ soup, here's a link for personal firewalls. I didn't check to see if any of the Vista FWs were 64 bit, but there are quite a few to choose from. http://www.matousec.com/projects/win...onal-firewalls

Yes, both WinXP and WinVista firewalls are off...

...and until I get a solution from Avanquest/Vcom, I've disabled System Suite's Net Defense firewall (and everything now works).

I'm not tech guru, but I sure don't know how it could do that. I'm (almost) positive that the problem is with Net Defense ...otherwise wihy would the problem go away with Net Defense disabled on both laptops?

It could be the same problem I had with SS6 & net defense on our Wireless. If the signal dropped for any reason, the firewall seemed to block it from coming back in, I think as it was try to reacquire the network address & that was with all the boxes checked properly. Going in to the firewall settings & allowing all until it acquired, then changing it back to normal, until it dropped again. Uninstalling 6 & installing 8 on the XP drive, seems to have solved that problem, but I had all networks enabled when I installed it. 2 computers in the house, one downstairs & one up, used to be hardwired but had to go wireless because of the distance. downstairs hardwired to router but with wireless capability disabled, upstairs, wireless enabled & finally working after hours spent on the phone with my ISPs tech support, none of their suggestions worked. It was either moving the router closer to the upstairs computer or installing SS8 with all wireless enabled that worked. I am no tech guru either, as you can tell by the long winded way I try to show something. BTW I think after 48 hours if Avanquest tech support does not hear from you, they consider the matter resolved. Even although they say they don't support certain products over the phone, I phoned 1-925-474-1701, earlier this week anyway.

EDIT: btw thanks Kabuchan, I will look through them, there are not many firewalls that work in Vista X64 & I don't think any 2-way yet at all.

This morning was a week that I submitted my problem to Avanquest/Vcom Tech 'Support' (is that an oxymoron, or what?). Still no reply!

Both laptops are working well now that Net Defense is disabled (with the router's firewall, I'm not too concerned about doing that). I'm seriously considering abondoning System Suite for some other internet security suite with decent support; however there aren't too many that are fully-compatible with Vista. Recommendations are welcomed.

As far as Vista is concerned, the rest of System Suite 8 works fine, plus you would have your router's firewall & Windows firewall, at least that is what I have on Vista right now. I do know a couple of people that run with ClamWin & Windows Defender in Vista X64. Personnaly I am going to stick with the rest of SS8 for now & hopefully down the road they will get the 2-way to work properly.

Great find Kabuchan, thanks, this one's going to get a serious look over. PA might want to take a look at this also when her friend gets everything sorted out.
