Default Backups play OK on PS2 but not TV & PC??-Blutach?

I made backups of the DVD edition of Dr. Strangelove and also the DVDs of the Taken miniseries by Steven Spielberg.

I used Memorex DVD+R Double Layer blank media and my Pioneer DVD-110D burner (firmware revision 1.41, the latest).

I used DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 by Lightning UK and it read to ISO and burned fine. I used default settings across the board except in read mode I enabled "Remove VOB PUOs" and "Remove IFO PUOs".

The backups play perfect on my slim PS2 (stock, not modded at all, region 1). But when I try the backup discs in my PC and my DVD player, they say there is no disc loaded after trying to read it for like 45 seconds!

What's wrong here? Why does it play fine on PS2? Is it because the region-free backups confuse the DVD player and the Pioneer drive in my PC?

Below is the text of the DVD Decrypter log for the session where I copied Dr. Strangelove:

no one reccomends this media, but your pioneer will probably burn it as good as any drive

verbatim is the only good dual layer?

is dvdd setting the booktype to dvd-rom?

I wouldn't try to burn dl with dvdd and a new drive, that's what ImgBurn is for.

The booktype doesnt list a tab for Pioneer.

I guess I will try to burn the same disc with Img burner and see if that helps.

OK, IMGBurner produced a disc that would play OK on my PC, but it has the same effect on my actual DVD player -- long load time, then "No disc inserted".

So I should get Verbatim DVD+R DLs?

Do you guys buy them online or thru eBay? The Memorex ones cost an arm and a leg @ Best Buy.

I don't know where our resident expert at dual layer has gone, Blutach?
DL's are his speciality, yes, verbatim dvd+r dl is the only game, but you
may have other problems?

I am moving this thread to the imgburn subforum.

I do recollect somewhere in the golden rules, I said something about Verbatims?

Use them. And don't weep.

But there's more!

I 18:04:16 Write Speed: MAX
Burn at 2.4X (though it appears your firmware has limited you to this anyway)

Use ImgBurn (definitely supports DL burning better than DVD Decrypter).

The drive should auto bitset to DVD ROM automatically like my Pioneer 109.

I would say it is the media. Ritek D01 isn't a bad as some people say. They are good discs but they are not playable on all hardware. My older Sony NS900 and even a cheap supermarket player plays them but, my newer Sony NS585 does not. However, verbatims work in all three players. Verbatim has much more compatibiltiy between different players.

Are you trying to play the disc in the Pioneer 110 once they are burned or are you using another drive? DL's don't work in my older drives.

Get Verbatim DL+R's and create a ISO with DVD Decryptor then burn with Imgburn 2.0. That is the best it can get. If it still doesn't work in anything then it is a DL/player/drive compatibilty problem

No need to create an ISO. ImgBurn does it directly. Or you can burn to the device (and at 2.4x it is a cinch!).

I have lately been doing direct to device burning and it has turned out to be safe as houses. But, we expect nothing else from ImgBurn anyway.

Now wait a minute. Wouldn't you need two drives to do this without reading it to ISO on your hdd first?

I would still create a ISO with DVD Deccryptor for all DL backups. I would rather use the original layer change in case the build mode cannot find it. I don't know if that is possible as I have only done build mode a few times. It is great for video_ts folder to DVD but, I won't use it to make a 1:1 backup.

I haven't had the nerve to try a direct burning yet. It is one thing to waste a 20p SL disc but not a ú2 DL disc.

No. Instead of create a ISO before burning to a disc. It creates a DL disc directly from the video_ts folder on the hard disk. This is how Nero does it but, but burning Imgburn is the preferred way.
