Default mpeg (.MOD) files to stand alone player

I have downloaded some files from a friends video camera. The files are mpeg (.MOD) which I burned to a DVD RW that plays on my PC but not on a SONY stand alone unit. Is there any way I can convert these files to get them to be compatible with this player.
