Default codec question

So y'all figured out that what worked for me was using the divx 5 codec and the mp3 audio codec (radium). But then I was reading around on this site, and found all this other stuff I *thought* I needed, (like the sld codec pack and gordianknot) and now some of my codecs are gone, (including the mp3 one) and I'm just wondering, is there a "best" codec for audio or video compression? Is this mpeg layer 3 codec better than the mp3 codec I was using before? Or the huffy codec?
