Default khp - Best resize filter? and why?

KHP did i get your quote correctly, that Sharp Bicubic is best resize filter for divx5 codec? Will this be ok for all movies - doom's guide says to use the middle ground which is neutral bicubic. I want quality - but i hate to use two CD's if one do the job.

What bitrate and resolution are you planning on using? For example, if your bitrate is relatively low at, say, 500-600kbps, using a "less sharp" resize filter (eg. bilinear) will yield better results due to the lower likelihood of artifacts.

Around 500 - never higher than 600.

Also i have a 3-hour DVD rip that may require 2 CD's - unless I go down to 448x256. The bitrate for that is about 398. It has a high compressibility though - 0.279.

I see. In that case, you'd be better off using bilinear resize mode. Sharp Bicubic will indeed result in sharper and better-looking video, but you need to match that with sufficiently high bitrate (which you are not using). Even if you decide to go on using Sharp Bicubic, I can assure you the quality won't be very pleasing at all to your eyes. I would probably say Bilinear will look cleaner instead.

Bar the Compressibility test (which I don't really use), the bitrate you are proposing to use is outrageously low. 2 CD would be the absolute minimum here (that should result in a video bitrate of 800+ kbps, which is NOT very high either).

since those guides are hardly up2date my suggestion is:
LANCZOS resizer in combination with CONVOLUTION3D

I just encoded 'analyze this' at 550 aproximate bitrate - it looks great. The untrained eye couldn't distinguish it from a DVD. (although i can easily) Would 400 look so bad? Cause i havent encoded that low yet.

I find that hard to believe. I can easily distinguish a 1300kbps DivX from the original DVD...

Would 400kbps look that bad? If I were you, I'd rather not proceed with the encoding and consequently suffer from eye-fatigue (to say the least).
