Default multipass problem

Every time I run multipass on an AVI file it just gets bigger. I've tried divx 5.0.2, 5.0.3 and 5.0.4 and they all do the same. I must be doing something wrong here? I thought multipass was supposed to make the files smaller on each pass.

I save over the original file and use flask. If any one could point me to a How To Multipass I would appreciate it, thanks.

NO, that is not at all how it's supposed to work. MultiPass encoding is supposed to get you closer to the desired filesize, indicated by your bitrate selection.
And it will also try to improve the bitrate distribution to make the video look better overall.
