Default Subtitles on a Yamada - Vobsub doesn't work. Encoding?

I have a film and I have the subtitles. I can easily select the subtitles on the yamada and play the movie. However, the problem is that I have seen the first forty minutes of the movie about 8 times, and find it very boring indeed! If you try and fast forward with the subtitles enabled, they suddenly dissapear. This is a major limitation in the Yamada which I am not is OK on the kiss.

Unfortunately the movie has already been ripped to DivX and I do not own the vobs. I have tried adding the subtitles using VobSub, which works fine on the PC. The yamada however does not pick them up. Could someone give me some walk through steps (or point me to a tutorial) to perminently add the subtitles to the film in a way that any avi player can read them? (Can nandub do this?)
