Default Want to use Divx codec in embedded application

I am new to this and would like to use the source code for the Divx codec in an application under Linux which will encode a video stream in real-time from a camera and save it to disk. Later I would like to decode the video and play it back in a window with some other information displayed to the side of the window. Is the Divx codec available for commercial applications? How fast will it encode on a Pentium 4 (fps)? Is the source code available so I can compile it, link to it and call it? Is the compression ratio variable and selectable or is it fixed? If this codec is not suitable for my application,. could you suggest another codec that will fit the bill?

Thank you
