Default audio question

This might sound funny but everyone i asked can't give me an answer. the question is, if a dvd has two audio tracks one is ac3 2 channel sound sound and the other is a ac3 6 channel 5.1 sound sound. Now if i would play the 6ch ac3 audio on two spreaks would it be that same as playing the 2ch ac3 file? the reason i'm asking is if it is the same then why keep the 2ch ac3 file when i can use that space towards more bitrate for the video.
personaly i don't think it is because then why would they make(author) them like that?

No - downmixed 5.1 audio would not be the same (close) as the 2-channel audio...
