Default adding subtitles to DVD

I'm trying to add subtitles to a movie and keep his menues.
I tried these two guides -

but i had problems with them (DVDmaestro didn't like my subs and crashed, the first one doesn't explain how to keep the menues) and in the end Nero said it can't reallocate the files and refused to burn it.
is there any way to add subtitles and keep the menues without all the mess of authoring and multiplexing the files?
if not, is there any better way to do the proccess that is not mentioned here?
