Default Extracting sound effects from a DVD

Hello, new member

I have done a lot of recording and making my own audio books over the past year since getting a brand new Samson mike, just for my own entertainment. Thing is, I'd like to take it to the next level, so I was thinking there might be a way to rip the audio out of and separate out the sound effects track from a DVD I own. I have tried simply holding the mike up, but it's hard to get clean sound this way. Games are of help, but the palettes for sound effects are often too limited and don't sound as organic as sound effects from a movie. In addition, I want a library of sound effects from specific movies, like Star Wars, Pirates of the Carribean, etc, without having to figure out how each of them were done and try to replicate it myself.

Is this sort of thing even possible? I'm no foley artist, so any help would be appreciated.

Welcome, Millenniumf!

You can demux the audio tracks of your DVDs with PgcDemux. It's a lossless operation.

Then, you will have to use any sound editor to isolate the sound effects you want to keep. Of course, you will have to re-encode them, and unless you use a lossless codec such as WAV or FLAC, there will be a slight quality loss.
Good free audio editors are OcenAudio and Audacity.
