Default how do i backup dvd to dvd+r

ok just bought a ricoh mp5125, and im trying real hard not to take it back for a refund. i cant find many dvd`s that are small enough to fit on the poxy 4.7gb capacity. should i wait until they bring out a decent capacity drive, eg. dual layer, or is there a way to overburn dvd+r`s? i know you can re-encode them but that sounds lossy to me. if it isnt noticble what is the easiest way to re-encode, a newbie guide would be apprieciated.
