Default Subtitles not appearing in VLC Player

I have a DVD of "The Girl with the dragon tattoo" and it has 5 subtitle tracks on it. However none are English - what i need - so I downloaded the subtitles (srt file) and loaded them up on VLC player. Nothing appears, although an extra track is listed on the context menu. I have played around with the options in 'Preferences', but can't seem to get it to work.

I have tried loading the subtitles using Win Media Classic, but I get a message about changing the video renderer type and reopening the file.
