Arrow-2 Why do mpegs transfer so large with DVD authoring program?

When i try to transfer mpegs, or avis, to DVD using DVD authoring program, they end up taking so much space on a dvd, (approx. 1GB per file) even though the orginal mpeg is only about 80MB. I can save money by just putting them on CD instead of DVD, by making a video cd instead of a DVD.

What's the difference? It doesn't make any sense to me?

Thanks for your patience..........

Yes, it doesn't make any sense, but it does as the way it is.
You're right, you can save money by making VCD instead of DVD. Those mpeg files are not good enough to make DVD anyway, so put it in VCD would be the best solution for you. As my experience, Ulead VideoStudio create smaller DVD's file than other software.
