Default xvid and TMPGEnc problems

i am trying to convert some xvid encoded videos to mpeg2 so that i can use it on stand alone. I am using TMPGEnc to convert it to mpeg2.

There seems to be a problem with xvid.... aside from this codec having so many many versions, ... i dont know which version to use. Some versions show inverted videos, some stutter and some dont even play.

When i try to import it in TMPGEnc i always get a "pointer error" after the 1st pass.

Does anybody know a better way to convert an xvid to mpeg2?
The only option i have now is to convert the xvid to mjpeg, but that will use so much space
