Default 'Denial of Service Attacks' as a way to stop piracy?

An Indian anti-piracy firm has revealed that they have used denial of service and other attacks against websites they targeted for anti-piracy actions.

The company, AiPlex, will normally seek action to be taken by the web host, to either contact the offending website owner in question, or to shut down the website account. If action is not forthcoming, then they take more drastic action.

"In such cases (when the web host or website owner does not take action), we flood the website with requests, which results in database error, causing denial of service as each server has a fixed bandwidth capacity," said Girish Kumar, managing director of AiPlex.

"At times, we have to go an extra mile and attack the site and destroy the data to stop the movie from circulating further," he also added, pointing to more serious forms of attack.

DoS and hacking are illegal in most countries, regardless of the intention.

Mr Kumar now denies launching DoS/DDoS attacks against non cooperating torrent websites, stating that while DDoS is a common form of attack, "This does not mean that we are doing such illegal activities while we are sending the copyright notices to Infringed sites."

However, operators of ICTorrent, a private tracker, has evidence of DoS attacks by AiPlex, and even an email, which said "ict attack on. enjoy ", which seems to suggest that AiPlex was warning ICTorrent of an upcoming attack.

"We have been dealing with this **** since Dec/2009 from them. We usually get attacked Thursday night till Sunday as this is our primetime to release PDVDs. They DDoS attacked us by sending 1 million requests from 10 to 100 IPs, we had to block all IPs. Our servers are installed with all modules so they will block automatically," ICTorrent told TorrentFreak.

The 4chan community has responded by DDoS'ing AiPlex's website, and also the MPAA's website for good measure:

Both appear to be online again.

The RIAA is apparently the next to be targeted by 4chan:

I've gamed on the same servers as 4chan members....they are pretty much all pricks, but you can not deny their strength.

4chan's Low Orbit Ion Cannon is now being aimed at infamous UK law firm, ACS:Law, as part of 4chan's "Operation Payback". The US Copyright Group would be next, I suspect ...

Copyprotected.com has been hacked, don't know if it's related to Anonymous, although it seems to have been done at the very least as an act of support, since the defaced website said "Payback is a bitch, isn't it?", referring to Anonymous' Operation Payback.

The site, owned by the MPAA, is used to display copy protection information for DVD and Blu-ray movies (have a look at the back cover of your DVD/Blu-ray, it has the Copy Protected logo on it).

I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner, but the FBI is now probing the attacks on copyright related websites:
