Default Lionsgate Choose 'Power Rangers' as Its First Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray

Lionsgate has revealed that the studio's first Dolby Vision Ultra HD title will be 'Power Rangers', to be released on June 27.

It follows the announcement by Universal of their own first Dolby Vision discs in the form of 'Despicable Me' and 'Despicable Me 2', both scheduled to be released in early June.

Dolby Vision is Dolby's take on HDR, or High Dynamic Range. HDR enabled titles offer greater contrast - brighter whites, darker blacks - in any given scene. These titles also offer an increased color gamut, allowing more colors to be presented on screen. All of this add up to giving HDR enabled content a more life-like appearance. Of course, HDR enabled content needs to be displayed on a HDR enabled display in order for viewers to be able to see the difference.

There are currently two standards for HDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, with the majority of Ultra HD Blu-ray releases so far using the HDR10 standard. 4K TV makers, as well, have chosen to support one or both HDR formats.

Dolby Vision offers several improvements over the open HDR10 standard, including greater color depth (12-bit vs HDR10's 10-bit), support for a brighter picture (10,000 nits vs 4000 nits) and Dolby Vision enabled TVs feature a special chip that knows the TV's own capabilities and helps these displays produce the best possible reproduction of the film compared to the original masters.

For many, Lionsgate's 'Power Rangers' and Universal's 'Despicable Me' and 'Despicable Me 2' will be a chance to test out the Dolby Vision capabilities of their TV and compare that with HDR10 (all three titles also offer HDR10 support), for example, on LG's 55E6 OLED TV which features both HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.
