Sir Elton John, Lily Allen Supports Anti-Piracy Net Bans

Some well known artists have come out to support the controversial "3-strikes" Internet ban. Lily Allen was first, although she has since been attacked for using another website's articles without permission to support her anti-piracy stance, and hence reveal her as a hypocrite when it comes to respecting copyright.

But in the latest news, Sir Elton John has also called for potential pirates to be banned from the Internet. He said:

For what it is worth, I am of the view that the unchecked proliferation of illegal downloading [even on a 'non-commercial' basis] will have a seriously detrimental effect on musicians, and particularly young musicians and those composers who are not performing artists

The banning approach seeks to work by scaring others into not pirating due to the risk of a banning. The actual banning itself won't actually help to raise profits and might even hurt them, as people who pirate songs do also occasionally buy them online, and banning them takes away their ability to do pirate but also to buy. The Internet, and even piracy, also helps to market music as rapper 50 Cent recently suggested. It was 50 Cent's suggestion which promoted Lily Allen to express her anti-piracy views.

Three strikes, which Allen is in favour of, deals with people who download illegal music. For her possible crime of distributing illegal music, the penalties might be harsher.

Lilly Allen is shutting down her anti-piracy blog and is actually quitting the music business altogether, partly due to the abuse she's been getting from Internet users over her views.

Sounds all very much like a publicity stunt to me.

This is the latest that Ms Allen had to say on piracy:

"If someone comes up with a burnt copy of my CD and offers it to you for £4 I haven't a problem with that as long as the person buying it places some kind of value on my music."

So it's not okay to share music for free, but it is okay to sell the illegally downloaded music and make money?

I don't think she's well known for taking drugs, but she definitely needs a refresher course on copyright infringement, even if the RIAA has to give her the lessons.
