Default error when cropping

hi!
I have a problem when trying to crop a movie and encode it into xvid. the avi file has black strips, which i'd like to remove, and is already encoded in XVID. I've tryed opening it in virtualdub - insert filter null transform - cropping
When i try to save it without compressing it goes fine, but when i try to compress it to xvid (or any other codec) i get the message "Cannot initialize video compression due to codec error: The source image format is not acceptable."
Any help is appreciated.
