Default help with missing codec for windows 7

Hi all,

I have been searching through the forums and need input. I have a Canon Camera that takes avi files at 1280x720. I use to use MPEG Video Wizard to change the resolution to 704x396 and divx codec for my standalone player. Since upgrading to Windows 7, I do not have the option for divx conversion anymore. All I get listed is cinepak codec by Radius, Indeo video 5.1, Intel IYUV codec and Microsoft Video 1. Please note that I have installed the klite codecs which should have given and stand alone codec like xvid 5. some research shows that I have to do some changes to the registry, however, I do not know how to do this for win 7. I would hope there is a simpler solution as well.

As an alternative, I've tried switching to virtualdub and the select video compression also shows the same codecs available, no divx option. Plus, I do not see an option to change the video resolution. Is there one for virtualdub?

Any thoughts on the missing codec? Plus any suggestions of a better program that would be able to convert, and resize the canon avi?

Thanks all!

Try this:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Quick_AVI_Creator

When the .avs script pops up size your video down by inserting
BilinearResize(720,480)
Just before the last line of the script

Typically the automatic bit rate set by Quick Avi Creator is too low. I usually set it to 2000 at least for .avi output.

Thanks for the response, the program you recommended is great for straight conversions. Very easy and the quality is excellent. Does this program do any editing?

I would still like any additional input on how I can resolve the codec issues. Any other thoughts?

For simple cuts you can use AviDemux.

http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/

It has a simple slider with << and >> buttons to go to the next I frame etc..
For one pass encoding with AviDemux I recommend v. 2.4 since it has much better motion detection in 1 pass mode. They cut it way down in v. 2.5(2 pass mode is the recommended method now but 2.4 can give good results in one pass usually.)

I'm not really up on editing and all the codecs. I mainly try to convert between formats in a simple way. I usually don't even bother with menus.

I use BD Rebuilder so I try to avoid codec conflicts. You might try Shark's Codec Pack. It does have a Bing install so you may want to be aware of that. But it's known as one of the better codec packs.

Have you tried the manufacturer of your camera for an online forum? Many companies have their own online forums now. It greatly increases the chances of finding someone who solved the problem with your specific details as they have the same equipment.
