1. Open file in VirtualDub
2. Set Video tab to Fast Recompress
3. Set Audio tab To Diresct Stream Copy
4. Video-->Compression
5. Select the proper codec
6. Select 2-pass,first pass
7. Choose a dir. for the log file.
8. Save .avi (wait until finished)
9. Video-->Compression
10. Select 2-pass,second pass and input the right bitrate.
11. Save .avi

thanx a lot!
Only 2 question:

-11. overwrite avi file?

-what about audio? the same steps to layer3?

I have to change avi file (film700mb) with codec 3.11 to avi file (film about700mb) with codec 4 or 5. May be use GordianKnot?

No.

You can't do that while the original AVI file is still loaded in Virtualdub itself. Create a new AVI file.

The same audio track will be used in the new AVI file (i.e. no recompression done on the audio).

Not for this simple task.

May I ask why you want to recompress the video to another format?

The divx 5.xx codecs should be backwards compatible (able to decode divx 3.11 alpha files).

Before even re-encoding, you may want to simply change the fourcc code of the divx 3.11 alpha file to divx or divx50 and see if your standalone divx player will support it.
