Default staxrip on ps3?

hey all, i got some compressed video files i want to play on my ps3. i have tried megui and found it just too bulky, staxrip looked nice but i am unable to get a file that is playable on my ps3. i have tried it several times and think i have used the same settings that megui used to produce working videos. anyone have any suggestions?

When you configure the x264 codec in StaxRip, make sure that the "Pyramid" option is not selected in the "B-Frames" section, and that "P4x4" is not selected either in the "Partitions" section.

There are also a couple of other settings that are different, but I haven't noticed any compatibility problems. Here's the list of differences between the recommended Xbox 360/PS3 encoding settings and the other presets like CE Highprofile that is found in StaxRip:

This guide might also help you in locating where all the x264 options are and what they mean in StaxRip:

I think that staxrip will not work to make videos playable on the ps3. i have found that the encoding needs to be done on a 4.1 level bitstream. i have been using another program called mediaencoder which has tons of options. the ps3 will open the newly encoded video, and i hear the audio fine, but there is no picture. it plays fine on my pc. suggestions?

This guide goes through some of the requirements of PS3 compatibility:

http://www.digital-digest.com/articl...ide_page1.html

To sum up:

* The H.264 stream needs to be AVC Level 4.1 compliant
* Supported profiles include Baseline, Main and High Profiles
* Maximum bitrate: None specified (although testing shows stuttering occuring above 20 Mbps)
* No B-Pyramid and P4x4 support

You can set all of the above in StaxRip except for the AVC Level, including the AVC level if you in "CLI" section. But if you have already encoded the file, then you can alter the AVC level manually after encoding using h264info (it just modified the file header, so no re-encoding is needed if your H.264 stream is already AVC 4.1 compliant):

https://sourceforge.net/project/show...kage_id=225029

I still prefer MeGUI, since once you get the hang of it, it's quite simply to use (takes no more than 5 minutes to set up the entire encoding).

But if you must use StaxRip, here's the precise steps:

1. Start StaxRip and from the "profiles" menu -> Encoder -> x264 -> More -> select the "CE Highprofile" profile,

2. Click on codec configuration to get rid of B-Pyramid (B-Frames section) and P4x4 (Partitions section). Go to the CLI section and add "--level 4.1" in the "Add" section. I haven't tested it extensively, but in theory, it should work.

3. Encode as usual.

well after more testing, i have given up on staxrip. i am also giving up on the h264 support on the ps3 because other than megui, i have not found free software that will successfully convert to it. it works alright, but is tedious when it comes to creating a batch of files to convert. i dont want to open each and save an avs file then make all the changes again. so i think i will just put my files into mpeg2 format with mediacoder since that has been working. I am not sure if it makes a whole lot of sense to keep files in h264 format because i havent been able to compress them more later or convert to another format (does that make sense?) so maybe just keeping files in avi or mpeg2 for long term would be best?

where the heck is the avi support that the ps3 was supposed to get?

DivX/XviD support will come soon I hope, perhaps being released with the the Blu-Ray Profile 1.1/2.0 update. I think the PS3 will have DivX certification, whereas the Xbox 360 solution seems to be a more generic MPEG-4 ASP support (which is why you don't see the DivX logo anywhere in the dashboard).

H.264 is great for transcoding HD content, like HDTV recordings, especially if you have a ultra fast CPU. For most people, it's not worth the trouble to convert your AVI files to this format, since you only get a little bit of improvement in file size, at the expense of hours of encoding and limited playback support.

i see. yeah i am really waiting for that divx support. the thing is i want to be able to rip my dvds to big files and store them on the ps3. i also have a psp and would like to be able to compress them later to put on that. i know that all this compressing is losing some quality, but just twice wouldnt be that bad. anyway i think i will just convert to avi for now and wait and see.
