Default WMV vrs DIVx

I have been using Microsoft's WMV format for my computer based movie files. I downloaded the Dr. DIVx software, and converted to DIVx. The file was larger at full quality.

I'm assuming if I started with AVI, maybe it would be smaller than WMV? One problem I have is many of my files start as ASF format, coming from a Panasonic DVD standalone unit.

I have several questions:

1. Is DIVx a smaller file than WMV?
2. Can DivX be embeded in a web page like WMV?
3. If DIVx and WMV are about the same file size, why use DIVx over WMV
4. Am I missing any questions?

It can be presumed that WMV 'loses' more data than DivX does. Do you see any difference between videos compressed by respective codecs?
