XviD, x264 and mpeg2 are commonly used for HD content

Media Player Classic plays back HD content much more efficiently than windows media player. In fact it plays it back better than anything else available - give it a try

its the decoder that determines efficiency (and player overhead, but pretty much negligible here)-- mpc's internal decoder is quite good, but for even lower cpu usage try dscaler (software) or nvidia purevideo (dxva)

Why not just use VLC media player? It plays HD content and it doesn't hog all your system resources http://www.videolan.org
