Smile Convert mod files to mpg

I am trying to edit some video files from a friends JVC camcorder and the files are in .mod format which is not recognized by any of my video editing software. Is there a way to convert these files? I would prefer free shareware if it there is any that will work. Thank you in advance for your help.
