Default I Got Dem Crazy Codecs Blues Again ...

Okay ... this keeps happening, and once and for all I'd like to get it right. My encoding/authoring programs (Nero, Roxio) have stopped working. This has happened before, and when it has, it usually ends up being a codec issue. So, if you wouldn't mind endulging me, could someone please suggest:
- the best way to clear codecs off your system; and
- the best codecs / codecs bundle to download that won't screw up your avi to dvd encoders.
