Unhappy-2 invalid avi file

Hi,
i got some divx files that i couldnt play

So i tried to fix them first with virtualdub/nandub but there i got an error message : "Invalid AVI file : chunk at xxxxx extends outside of parent by xxx bytes"

Next i tried divfix 1.05, it worked for the first file but for the next it just worked half, on the end of the file the wmp repeats the sound of the last viewable 3 seconds all the time and the image freezes.
Divfix also reports errors :
"Corrupted data detected at frame xxxxx
Error offset: xxxxxxxxxx"

Any ideas what other to try?

You can try to repair the corrupt files with AVIDeFreezer

If that doesn't work (because the corrupt size is too large) , you can always try to cut out the corrupted frames woth VDub.

hope this helps

Do us a favor

Download a little program called AVIFourcc code changer and open your file in this one

And come back with what it reads

To satisfy the curiosity you might have about the WHY, i'll copy and paste the following quote from divx-repair
Quote:
In the previous section I already explained what FourCC codes are and showed how some people are using them to invent new formats. Because I have advised you not to install codec packages like Angelpotion and SMR, you might be wondering how to play downloaded movies encoded in those formats. The answer is simple: change the FourCC into the code for DivX . Doing this will cause your player to use the DivX codec to decompress the file instead of looking for the Angelpotion or SMR codec. You can change this easily using a little program called AVI FourCC Code Changer. Make sure the AVI file you want to change is not write protected, open it and change the FourCC from MP43 or AP41 into DIV3 or DIV4 from the dropdown box, both will work.
So the DIV3 tells me there is nothing strange and you should be able to play it with the "normal" codecs installed.

(Intermezzo: is that Mississippi burning 2 cd's 701 and 699Mb ?)

So if you have a codec pack installed (kristal or Nimo)
AND you have divx4.12 and answered NO
Then you should be able to play the movie

BTW also download the latest VDub (1.4.8); not the problem but it's better

What puzzles me is that you say you are not able to play or open it with VDub.

And what exactly do you mean with "messed up"?

Anybody else any briljant idea's

Default Just a thought...

Had the same problem, it turned out that the file was too big so had to use DivFix to rebuild the index, try it, may work with yours.

So what do i mean with messed up :
lets say the whole avi file is 1 hour in length. It didnt start in any player and i cant open it with vd, so i used divfix with the following result, the movie is playable up to 50min after that the last 3 seconds of sound are repeated until the movie ends (at 60min) and the image freezes at 50min.

thats what i called a messed up end
