Default To The Wolf

Your audio source requires the AC3 codec for decoding. Installing the AC3 codec from a codec pack, such as Tsunami or Nimo, will address the problem. Alternatively, you can install a DVD player software, such as PowerDVD, to achieve the same task.

"I have already got winDVD and powerDVD. I really don't know what to do."

Try playing the file (the extender should be .AVI - rename, if necessary) under WinDVD. If it plays with audio, you'll know that the file is okay. If this is the case, download DVD Genie and use its facility to register to Windows WinDVD's codecs/filters.

Let us know of your success ;>}

I tried playing it in winDVD, but it doesn't play. I don't think it recognises it as a video file.

What is the full name of the file you tried to run with WinDVD?

What version of WinDVD are you using (Requires v.3.0 or higher to play .AVI files)?

I don't know, its winDVD 2000. Is it too old? The file I want to play is called world is not enough.avi. I think it might be the file, I have tried other divx files and the seem to work fine.

"its winDVD 2000. Is it too old?"

Yes. As i mentioned previously, the ability to play .AVIs started with WinDVD version 3.0...

Default sort of workin

I have sort of got around the problem, I can now play in WinDVD4 but had to load another codec to make it work in media player. OK so far but I still can not get it to work in Virtual Dub!!
I have previously tried Tsunami codec pack (latest full version) and the Nimo pack (latest version) neither of which worked.

I am running a fresh install of XP pro (I have even formated HDD and reinstalled between tests, thats how desperat I have got).

The annoying thing is that It used to work fine until I screwed the system folder (which prompted the first format and fresh start)

The only thing I can think of is that I had DVD authoring software installed previously.

Is there any reason that the AC3 codec wont install on XP (is there as system setting that could prevent this).

I have the files on my HDD (very small) which allowed me to get it working but dont have a link to the origional page where I got them. I could pass it on if you need it by e-mail, just put 'AC3 codec please' in the subject line of the e-mail.
