Default Playback without additional codecs

Since both Xvid and Divx are MPEG4-3 based, why can't I just play them using Media Player 9, which supports that format? I know the FourCC codes are different, so I have used the FourCC changer to MPEG4-3, but it will not playback.

Also, is FFDSHOW still being developed? I went to the homepage http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/. It shows the last news was on Sept 2002, and it is a alpha product.
