Wink the right tool for the right job!

I have been able to play about 98% of the .avi files I have downloaded. I have installed the Divx 4.12, the Kristal Studios Codec Pack and read the FAQ on codec's. Occasionally, I will get a movie with sound and no video. Is there a way I can tell what codec that specific file needs? I am using Windows Media Player to play the files.

From within Explorer, rightclick on the file and select "Properties", select the "Details" tab.

It says it is DIVX MPG4 V3, but I have other files with the same info and they play okay. Any idea why this one does not? I am banging my head!

Default Information

If you know how to find out, we need to know what speed the audio is. Like 44.1kHz or 48kHz.

Then, we need to know which version of Windows you're on. Like XP! or Windows 98, or Windows 2000 or Windows ME.

If you're on Windows XP and the audio is at 48kHz, then that could be the problem.

A fix for this could be using VirtualDub to open and even play the file.

Default Windows XP only plays audio?

Download a program called VirtualDub form www.divx-digest.com

Use VirtualDub to open the file.

Then, click on the Video Menu and choose compression.
Choose Divx MPEG-4 Low-Motion and choose OK.

Click on the file menu and choose "Save as AVI..."

It'll take a little while to save it, but when it's done you should be able to play it.

Any way to find out exactly which codec I need rather than using the shotgun approach and putting them all on.

Default AVI Info

Use the program called AVI Info. You can get it from divx-diget at the following location:

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/terabits_avi_info.html

If you use VirtualDub, you can find out what rate the audio is encoded at and re-encode the AVI with any codec on your system.
It should work in Windows Meida Player if you re-encode it if VirtualDub can play it.
