Default STANDALONE XviD Player!

I didn't see any posts about this up in the forum, so I thought I would let you all know about it. I just caught wind of a new standalone divx player-- that is, a DVD player that will play DivXs on your home system. It's made by Lite-On (model # LVD-2001). I went ahead and bought one, and am now waiting for it to arrive. When it does, I'll post a full review of its DivX and XviD playback capabilities.

Alright, the player is set to arrive in a few days, but in the meantime, I thought maybe I'd post some more information about this puppy. Here's a review which sadly leaves out the MPEG-4 capability of the player: http://www.slcentral.com/Lite-On-LVD-2001-1001/.

Here's a CDRLabs review on it, once again barely mentioning its DivX/XviD capability: http://www.cdrlabs.com/articles/index.php?articleid=24.

Another similar one:http://www.computex.com.tw/computex2...asp?index=5715

PC Magazine gives it 4.5/5 here: http://www.pcmag-mideast.com/reviews...kVEuZpUgXVcVgI

You can buy one here: http://www.pcclub.com/product_detail...temno=A1546967

Anyway, in a week or so I'll post an update with my review of its ability to play MPEG-4 formats. Check back soon.

Default Update

The unit arrived this morning. I haven't had a chance to really see what it can do, mostly because I'm short on time. However, so far I'm relatively disappointed.

First off, on lower quality CD-R discs (light green), the video seems to hang every few seconds. As my collection of DivXs is primarily burned on the budget discs, this poses quite a problem for me. I'll post an update once I've bought myself a spindle of high quality media, so that I can take a look at recently encoded videos.

Secondly, there's a big problem with playback: you can't change your position in the video. Fast forward and rewind don't work on DivXs. I guess in media player you have the same thing, only you can move the position slider. This is going to cause a lot of trouble down the line, like when I pause a movie and go to work, and someone else wants to watch something else. Or if I missed something that someone in the movie said-- or a hundred other things.

Thirdly, the decoder doesn't seem very good. I'm not sure about this though. The problem is, my older movies (as in, over a year old) are the ones that were burned on my good quality discs, but their encoding might not have been very good. Either way, the only movies I've seen so far have looked awful. I have a very nice copy of The Pianist that I'd like to try out, but that's going to have to wait a few days until I can buy better discs.

Of course, there are good things about it. The fact that it can decode DivX and XviD at all is great. This is gonna save me a lot of money, once I start burning things on media worthy of the player. It's small, it has good features etc, but you can find all of that in the reviews I linked to in my last post.

Does anyone have any experience with this player? If so, please post what you think of it. Also, if there are any specific requests as to what you would like me to review about it, post your questions and I'll try to get an answer up as soon as possible.
