Default best low-bitrate/VBR mpeg-2 encoder

Hi friends ,

I am still quite happy with Tmpgenc Plus and its CBR mpeg-2 quality but for VBR and very low bitrates i found out, it does not give me the desired sharpness anymore. What is your encoder recommendation for low bitrates with the following specs: max.1600kbps VBR / min 800kbps?

- Canopus ProCoder
- Cinemacraft encoder
- Mainconcept encoder
- Tmpgenc family (Xpress/Plus)

thanks

Diego

Procoder 2 is magnificent but pricey.

CCE is rubbish IMHO

HCEnc, while not on your list is also very good. Perhaps best is to grab a low BR matrix and use it as your matrix for whatever encoder you pick.

Regards

You might try the Angel Best Very Low - get it from Rockas Matrix package on the DVD Rebuilder site.

EDIT: Here 'tis

Code:
08 16 19 22 26 27 99 99
16 16 22 24 27 29 99 99
19 22 26 27 29 34 99 99
22 22 26 27 29 34 99 99
22 26 27 29 32 35 99 99
26 27 29 32 35 40 99 99
26 27 29 34 38 99 99 99
27 29 35 38 99 99 99 99
16 17 18 19 20 21 99 99
17 18 19 20 21 22 99 99
18 19 20 21 22 23 99 99
19 20 21 22 23 24 99 99
20 21 22 23 25 26 99 99
21 22 23 24 26 99 99 99
22 23 24 26 99 99 99 99
23 24 25 99 99 99 99 99
It'll be quite blocky in parts and not sharp at all in others.

Regards

Hey blu, I think i was not clear in my question earlier, so let me rephrase it.

Can you suggest a low bitrate matrix with decent output quality (no blocks etc). ???

No.

Why do you think we strive for higher BR?

It's really SVHS or MPEG1 territory, isn't it?

You┤re right, Blu.

See, 1/4D1 is still my favourite encoding technic handling dvd videos.A video (90min) encoded with 1300kbps CBR in TMPGenc shows more than acceptable quality cause its not transcoded to mpeg-1.
Such a video has a 1,GB size and muxing a 224kbps encoded 5.1 audio stream to it (approx.150mb) is big audio fun.But TMPGenc shows weakness with low VBR and i┤d like to put four films (my personal challenge ) on a dvd so i need to swap to VBR.Thats why i was asking for a better low VBR encoder.

-btw. three dvds on a single layer dvd is no problem anymore -

So the problem is:
How to reduce size of the mpeg-2 1/4 encoded video stream?! Reducing framerate?
I can┤t change the video resolution without loosing dvd player specs compatibility. The 224kbps 5.1 audio is on its lowest point and still ok for listening. And 1300kbps is the lowest point for CBR 1/4D1 encoding...

any more ideas?
