Default no audio: converting .avi to .mpg

ok, i was converting a file to .mpg and ran into trouble.

i loaded the file into TMPGEnc as i always do and got this:

<img src="http://kyoudai.net/misc/noaudio.jpg">

...no audio file. not sure if it's a codec problem (i can play the .avi just fine), so i opened it in VirtualDub and saved the audio as a .wav file. no problem up to here. went back to TMPGEnc and loaded the .wav file as the audio file. in the end, the .mpg STILL ended up without audio.

the file info for the .avi is this:

<img src="http://kyoudai.net/misc/fileinfo.jpg">

but since i'm nearly illiterate with these things, i can't figure out where the problem lies. any help is appreciated

carla.

The file includes an .AC3 audiostream ("Unknown tag 2000"). Assuming you have an .AC3 codec/filter installed on your system:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to one greater than the highest priority of listed items. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

setarip- did that, didn't work. i'm assuming if i can play the file, that means i have the codec. is that right? i increased the priority like three times and still no audio.

zeexgod- any suggestions? the only one i've worked with is TMPGEnc.

The .AC3 audiostream is probably lacking a PROPER header (TMPGEnc and other similar programs are often sticklers for such things).

Use ".AC3Fix" to fix the header...

did that. after some 100000 frames, it gives me an error message. i'd tell you what it says but someone shut my computer off before i could look at it.

maybe trying another program that doesn't fixate so much on this?

To convert .AC3 files to .WAV format:

**IMPORTANT - VirtualDub v.1.4AC3 is a specific MODIFIED version of VirtualDub!

Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub v1.4C-AC3, set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying" and select (under "File") "Save WAV" - and save as .AC3 (IMPERATIVE to save as .AC3!).

Despite the fact that .AC3 file extracted using VDub-AC3 doesn't play properly, PX3AC3Converter (or BeSweet) will do a perfect job of converting it to .WAV format.
