Here is one I just went through yesterday.
My wife and I received a personal check made out to me and her. I signed it and she took it to her bank where I am not on her account to deposit it. The bank (Commerce Bank in the US) refused to accept it for deposit unless she showed them proof of my signature.

In Austria it is common practice to pay for books purchased by post/on the net by taking a slip to one's local bank and doing a sort of bank transfer. Try doing that outside Austria/Switzerland/Germany.

I failed to persuade the clerk my Scottish bank that Bankleitzahl and Kontonummer stand for sort code and account number respectively. The former is formatted with six digits at the end, hence must be the sort code, haha, and therefore the Vienna Stadtbank or whatever it was has the same numeric ID as the Bank of America. I did try to persuade her that this was unlikely and that no, there was no point in telephoning the Bank of America for advice. Very hard!

I passed the buck by sending the firm a cheque, not in euros of course, and letting them sort out the headache. Not very nice of me!
