Default Which is better?

I have burned two discs of the same movie, and scan them with Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.7.16.

The first one has PIE Average of 0.37 and PIF Total is 608.
The second has PIE 4.76 and PIF 154. Both have a quality score of 95.

Can you guys give me your opinion on which one is the better burn and why?

Second question is how do you know when your burner is reaching the end of it's life span. Does it just stop burning altogether or are there some foretold signs that its get close to going out?

On this burner sometimes the eject button doesn't work. I have to press repeatedly on the button to get it to open. I've even had to go to my computer and right click on the drive then eject. This only happens every so often right now it's working fine.

Another problem I had recently was the burn went fine, but when I scanned it, it would just stop about half way through. I upgraded to the latest version of CD speed and got the same results. The playback is fine.
I'm leaning towards the problem is bad disc, because this only happened on a few of them from the same batch. Note I have Nero Smart Start which has it's own version of CD Speed and also the latest version installed. Wondering if removing Smart Start might help. Thanks

Hi ipaulo,

On the problem that I have highlighted from your post ...

1) Open "Nero CD-DVD Speed"

2) Run "Scan Disc" the "Read Test" at max allowable speed ... usually 8X ... I am almost sure that you will have "Damaged" AND "BAD" sectors on your dvd ... that is why your dvd player just chokes.

Toby is an "Italian Volpino." Google "volpino" and you'll see a ton of them - most of which are located in Italy. The King Charles' are GREAT dogs.

Hi iPaulo,

I did some reading of my old notes and cheat sheets ...

I think you meant a PIF of 0.37 and a Total PIE of 608. But nonethelss ... the number that tells you which BURN is Better is the "PIF". the lower the number the better. So, with that in mind your First Bunr is the Better one.

BTW, a PIF higher than 8 ... and I would say you are in trouble ... if you are archiving I would suggest that you get a NEW MEDIA blanks and even a BETTER DVD Burner.

Hope this helped.

I wonder where are all the Regulars here!

G!

PS - Toby is my New HERO!

Here's what scan disc gave me. I think it's the disc, these are printable from supermediastore Premium Line -R 8X. This is the replacement batch, the first batch were really bad. I RMA them, they even replaced the ones I had already burned.
It will play on the PC and on the stand alone dvd player. Its just that I'm having problems doing a disc quality scan. I like to scan them at 4x and I always get a quality score of 95 sometimes it's 98. What I'm noticing is sometimes it won't scan at 4x and at 8x. Though sometimes if I scan at 8x it will complete the scan then usually I can go back and do a 4x and it will complete.
I'm really leaning that the problem are the disc. These are TY02s, but I have a feeling that they are being made in a different country. At any rate my gut is telling me the quality of the TY02s are starting to go downhill. As I mention before this is a replacement set. They were the tape wrapped ones.

I wonder if Chewy is on a vacation, I haven't seen him around lately.

How did this turn into a pet thread? That's cool though, I happy to see it happen. Here's my dog Riki-Taro

Hi iPaulo,

Your attached Scan is beautiful ... perfectly A-OK DVD burn ... no "Damaged" or "Bad" sectors ...

To ease your mind some of my Blanks -- Not the TY02 ones though -- stop scanning at about 80 or 90% and I would get an error saying "End of the Line" or something to that effect ... never a complete scan ... I can't remember Brand ... it was either Memorex or something like that.

If you buy TY Original discs ... heck you don't even have to go threw the Scan Test ... I never do ... burn and archive and move on.

Now if you are entering a "Scan Contest" like we used to have a thread here I can see why you would be concerned with a Good Scan. Feast your Eyes on this Bad Boy Scan (attached).

Regarding the tape wrapped TY's ... buy the Normal in the Spindle ones and don't get the SuperMediaStore (SMS) Linkyo TY brand ... I wouldn't anyway ... since you are NOT really saving any money!

BTW - iPaulo ... "Riki-Taro" looks like one spoilled puppy ... and he owns the helm! and that is the way should be for Man/Woman's BEST Friend!

G!

Wow, that's a nice scan!
Here's a couple of my best ones. Funny thing my pie and pif numbers are lower but the quality score is less than yours. It must take other things into consideration.

Sometimes I wonder about CD-DVD Speed, because I've done two scans back to back on the same disc and get two different readings. Sometimes they're pretty far off from one another.

Yes Riki is very spoiled, but a great dog. He's by far the smartest dog we ever owned.

Thumbs up

Hi iPaulo,

NT is right ... your Scans are BETTER than mine ... I guess it is just the way BenQ scores and LiteOn might be more picky.

But your Highest PIF Height is "1" ... that is darn good!

And NT you are in Big Big Big Trouble for dissing my scan!
... Just Kidding ... Hope YOU are doing WELL!

Gonkw I never dissing your scan Benq is a very good burner ( never die ) Lighton is a better scanner but it have a very short life to spare, if you have TY like the one you have scan one on top one on bottom and forget the rest, the more you scan the more you use the lazer waisting your life span on that lighton you have
