Question Mpeg1 file tracking

Hi,
I'm looking for a way to detect how many times videos that we produce are played and downloaded over the internet.
www.dmc.co.uk makes viral videos in Windows media player and Quicktime. With these file types some script can be inserted in the encoding process that pings a server everytime the video is played when the user is connected to the internet.
Are you aware of any way that this can be done with mpeg1 files?.
