    NirCmd does some cool things

Somebody told me that NirCmd was very cool. When I looked at it there
were so many command line params that I shied away from it. But when
trying to find a way to avoid the wav volume being bumped up every time
I logged onto XP I found that the easiest way to fix it was with NirCmd

Besides adjusting the audio volume some other cool things you can do:

You can let Imgburn eject after a burn and close the program window,
then close the drawer with this command:

    nircmd cdrom close x:

where x: is the drive letter for the dvd drive

To avoid remembering the params you can just put the line in a file
in your Path named dvdclose.cmd or you can make a shortcut
with the line in the Target line of the shortcut.

Anyway, if you are having the same weird thing in XP where on bootup
the wave volume is up high and you keep having to adjust it, this NirCmd
.cmd file worked for me. Save the 2 lines to a file in your Path named
    logout.cmd

    nircmd setsysvolume 10000 waveout
    nircmd.exe exitwin logoff

The number you use will vary depending on how high you have the
overall system volume and how much gain you have on your speakers.
But you can run the setsysvolume line with the master volume applet
open and watch where the sliders go as you change the number.

Just remember when you log off to type logout at a command prompt
    or into Slickrun.

I gather the volume settings work a bit differently in Vista but
I didn't investigate because I don't get the loud logins with Vista.

NirCmd is free and very small and comes with a .chm help file with
plenty of examples. Another good thing about it is it works pretty
much the same in Windows NT 4 and later. Some features might not
work(such as setting window transparancy) unless you have XP
    or Vista.

      cool volume mouse control

The same page that has NirCmd command line freeware also has a cool
utility to adjust volume and open/close the CDROM drawer(s) with
hotkey/mouse commands. Also you can resize or move the active window.
Don't forget to download the plugins.

        Do it yourself Toolbar

I only use Windows Start Button as last resort. I've had a habit over many years of creating folders on the Desktop to categorize all the utilities and programs I have installed. So along the left side of the desktop where AutoArrange would put it, I've had folders Editors, Internet Multimedia Programming System Tools Utils etc..

Shortcuts to the stuff I use the most are in the Quick Start Toolbar but being mouse oriented after awhile I notice it's really a drag to keep mousing over to the left side of the screen to open a folder and run a program. And if I moved the icons to the right hand edge chances are stuff would happen to autoarrange 'em back where they came from anyway!!!

So yet another folder to the rescue. I made a folder on the Desktop called Apps. I moved all the other folders I listed earlier into that folder. The next step is right click the mouse on the Windows Taskbar next to the System Tray. Go up to Toolbars=>New Toolbar and select it. From there
you can navigate to the new Apps folder on the desktop.

The result is a little Apps>> toolbar on the Taskbar. When you left click
you get a vertical menu next to the System Tray like in the attached jpg.

          Optical Drive Tray Gizmo

I was using NirCmd.exe to open and close my DVD Drive Tray without having to press the button. Tired of typing in OpenDVD or CloseDVD at the command prompt I ended up making 2 Quick Launch Icons to do the jobs.
Fine, but no confirmation dialog, plus I'm using up 2 spots on my Quick Launch.

So I cobbled up an AutoIt3 script to do the job with one Quick Launch Icon utilizing a confirmation dialog. An accidental click doesn't try to open or close the tray.

My little freebie has an installer and you can download it with this link:
          Tray

To keep is simple I just used a Yes No Cancel MessageBox. Yes to Open,
No to Close and Cancel to cancel. If run with no params it operates on
the first optical drive found in the system. If you have more than one
you can edit the Target field in the shortcut to specify which drive
          letter to use.

Anyway, I created a dialog box for it instead of using the Yes No Cancel kludge.

As long as she doesn't bury 'em in the house I guess you're ok.

What if you change your desktop to align to grid, won't they stay where you put them.

The only time she digs is in the backyard and only in the summer. Then I have to fill the holes in with black dirt.
