Alright, well, do you think it's safe to update my firmware so I can actually use PlayStation Network again? Seeing as how there's now CFW? Or do I need an older firmware to install the CFW?

Sony releases a new firmware, 3.56, that seems to include a new master key to counter the leak, and the 3.55 CFW. Of course, the new firmware will be cracked in short order.

Sony wins "temporary injunction" against the distribution of the PS3 hack and hacked firmware by geohot, which is meaningless really because it's already "out there", plus others are releasing firmware too. The 3.56 firmware which Sony released to deal with this has already been hacked as well.
