Get modified firmware for the NEC 3550A here. Just click " NEC-3550/3551" on the left hand side. - http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

Getting modified firmware is the same process as updating just factory firmware.

I can rip a DVD-9 (Dual Layer) in about 9 min. - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827152059

(Note: You will need "Modified Firmware" for the kind of performance I am talking about. Although, it is great right out of the box too.)
the 3550 comes with no riplock out of the box, I will verify with roundtuit

            Yes

"What is the modified firmware what is that how do it get it. Can you point me in that direction."
See my previous reply. Modified firmware is just that, it is modified to remove some of the restrictions the manufactures place on you (the drive). (Ex: Almost all DVD burners will be "Rip locked" to prevent the drive from ripping at more than 2X speed, which is extremely slow! Modified firmware removes that restriction allowing you to fully utilize the drives performance.)

"do i really need a new burner?
It could very well be a possibility! That one may have passed on to the "other side".

            "is mine out dated?"
            Yes.

Well, the 3540A I bought was to but, I had to flash the drive with modified firmware to achieve the speeds I am getting now. (So technically I guess it isn't "Rip Lock". )

the 3550 based on the 4550 supposedly has no riplock in the factory firmware,
the 3540 has always had it, they are different hardware based lines.
                nec faq's cd freaks
there's a good possibility the 3550 will be able to be crossflashed to the
4550, both suffer firmware immaturity, especially with error scanning,
                hence my roundtuit procrastination.

it looks up at me every day and says please let me go into the beast with
                the 3540

I did that for jlohojo7, not for you.

well thanks alot for the explanation of everything but one question still remains. What about install can i simply plug in the new burner where my old one was and flash the firmware?? This is my only hold up.

yes you can just pull out old and replace with new,
wait on the firmware tho, it might work out of the box well
                              enough.
jumpers are about the only thing to be concerned with.
master slave cable select, just jumper new to match old
