          what is 40?
the only stat i see with 40 is the pin connector.

ribbon cable, ata100/133 cable it has 80 wires(they are finer) and the extra 40 are grounds, it just helps 5-10% performance wise, but even at 8x burn or 16x read, you should be getting a cleaner signal, a lot of mobos even warn
when you don't have one connected

Another reason to keep your primary burner on top is because heat rises. Let's say you got your primary burner and a secondary burner above, (even with fans), the internal temperature of the higher drive would have accepted some ofthe transfer of heat from the lower drive. When my LG4163 (lower drive) overheats, it goes into the toilet when burning. Make sure your fans are working and above all, do not smoke in the same house as the PC. I have seen PCs where the dust and tar is a quarter inch thick inside and the person wonders why it bit the dust. I do not repair computers for a living but a friend does and he shows me these awful examples.

PS i smoke but i smoke outside because of 2 young children!
