Burning Is Taking A Long Time

I am having a similar problem with my new Samsung...

I just purchased a new Samsung external writer from BB SE-w184M AMBN. It's on sale and I thought the lightscribe technology would be cool for home movies and picture cds. Any way, I tried a DVD burn last night just to see how the burner would do. The first one I aborted in mid burn because it had already been over an hour and a half to burn the movie. I figured it out that I had the burner plugged in to the wrong USB. I moved it to the 2.0 port and tried again. This time it burned the dvd the same as I have always done before. It still took a bit longer though. I am using Nero 7 ultra and taiyo 8x dvd-r disks. The internal burner on my dell is a NEC. I normally use it to burn my dvds and just for peace of mind I burn at 4x even though the writer will burn to 12x I believe. I just started doing this not too long ago and have always had successful burns. I have never looked at charts or logs or whatever to see how a burn is doing. I always just watched the movie to make sure. Everytime I do a burn on the internal drive (the NEC) at 4x, it takes just under 14 minutes. When I did a test run with the new Samsung external drive at 4x the time ended up being about 25 minutes. Are these numbers different when it comes to internal drives versus external? Is there something that I need to do here? I'm thinking I will probably take the writer back. Any help...?

internal interface is usually dma 2, with an 80 conductor cable it can be faster, the 4X burning is about 5.5MB/s, which is a piece of cake for dma 2(33MB/s)

altho usb2 is advertised as 480Mb/s, in fact it does well to do 10-13MB/s

the real problem is it's a shared system resource and can bog down easily as it's more dependent upon the cpu

I doubt if it's your burner, could you post a burn log for some more clues

I'll get working on it tonight and try to post something. Like I said before I have never looked at logs or graphs so I will have to research how to do this.

here are my burn logs

When trying it again tonight both of the burners burning the same media at 4x produced better results. This time the external samsung wasn't too far behind. Only about a minute slower. Weird..? Either way, if you would look at the logs to tell me if everything looks to be working as it should. Thanks

repeat test at 8X sometime, there was only 30 seconds diff that time

but be sure and leave the computer alone after a fresh reboot and with everything heavy duty shut off when you do the usb burn

is that a dell computer?

it is a dell pent 4 3ghz 1GB computer with all files to be burned on a external 250gb WD my book HD

all bets are off, usb to usb does not work in any kind of consistent fashion, like playing russian roulette

an associate was doing a usb to usb transfer thru his laptop, we lost a lot of work

Burning DL discs now

Well that settles it then, I am going to take the new external drive back to BB. I was thinking the external drive would work as good or better than the internal plus the lightscribe I thought was a neat feature. I don't need lightscribe that bad.

On another note, I have always used the Taiyo 8x DVD-r, but I wanted to do a few DL discs. I bought some DVD-R DL Ritek RiData discs from Meritline only to find out after the fact that my NEC ND-3450A writer only supports DVD+R DL. I thought it was both. Anyway, I am in the process of returning them to Meritline in favor of some +R DL disks, but I am not sure which ones to get. I went out and bought a three pack of +R DL disks. They are Memorex 2.4x. I know that they don't have a good reputation and I was expecting that they would work at all. On the NEC I was right, the drive would not accept the disks for Nero or Imgburn. I tried one in the new Samsung external with Nero and it worked just fine. Since I am taking the Samsung back I need to find some discs that will work with the NEC. I would like to know for sure if I could which ones would work. Does anybody have experience with this burner and which DL work best? (preferably with Nero, I never had much success with Imgburn). By the way here is the log for my DL burn with the external Samsung. Everything look okay?

i think first I am going to take the Samsung back and get some Verbatim +r DL to try out first.

That post seems to talk alot about firmware and flashing and a bunch of stuff that I have no knowledge of. Except for the the memorex DL +R not working (which I am not really surprised) the burner has worked flawlessly. I have always fed it TY DVD-r discs though. If the verbatims don't work then I will consider swapping out the internal drive.

the verbatim +R DL discs work with no problems on the NEC internal writer. I should have had these from the beginning. And I can get them locally for the same as Meritline!!

You could update your Nero but do not install InCD.

keep the dell/nec for cd-r's and dvd-r, it's the best

Imgburn is hands down the best dual layer burning software, nero is not
