if you want free, you're not gonna get anything more than a mediocre to low end player, somewhat like windows media player. if you want something good that's worth using, you'll have to pay for it. I was lucky, I bought a soundcard and it came with powerdvd 4.

        I use NeoDivX version 9.2
The new version 9.3 is really messed up, and seems to be mostly french.

NeoDivX mostly supports Xvid, however I have created DivX 3, 4 and 5 encodes. It sometimes doesn't auto-crop properly when using the default settings during rip. It also has difficulty encoding subtitles with some movies. Plain and simple is quick and easy to use, and has many free utilities included within it like Smart Ripper, VirtualDub, and more.

It's a try, but I can't give you a link as I don't know where the older version can be obtained. Altho, I have a copy, " if it is legal to distribute". I hafta read the disclaimer again, but it is freeware last I checked.
Government throws more money at a problem, so it looks like they are making a difference.
