    PowerDVD crashing the system

i have had a million problems getting my Plextor 704A just to run, and find software ot do everything with.
i am now at a point where i can read CD-ROMs Burn CDs (and presumably dvd, though i havent tried it yet)

but i still cannot play VCD or DVD of any region.

i assumed the inbuilt IBM thinkpad software was sucky so i got PowerDVD but it is freezing my computer the moment it loads a DVD.

i'm running win98SE and have a 600mhx processor and a hell of alot of ram etc.. all the system requirements asked of PowerDVD.. is it possible the software just doesn't like the stupid burner? or the burner just doesn't like playing videos??
