I do have one other question though:

I ripped 2 hours of video and while ripping I had the rip slit into 8 chapters.
Now for the moment I am just playing with 1 of the 8 chapters and so far it was converted into a 2.9 gig file. If it creats a file so large how will I get the whole 2 hours of video all 8 chapters on 1 DVD?
yeah that's absolutely ridiculous. what i'd be doing is (and i know this might be a pain now) compressing the 8 pieces to divx using virtualdub first, this will provide normal file sizes and maintaining reasonable quality. then use these 8 pieces to encode, then author. at the authoring stage they can all be joined easily. Otherwise you may want to re-rip the whole video as one and then convert that to divx then encode, and author. it's up to you. myself, i'd re-rip the whole thing.

When I rip the whole thing again it takes up a bit over 22 gigs.
I still do not get how 2 hours of .avi take up over 22 gigs. If I go from .AVI to DIVX and then to MPEG-2 then to the DVD what will that do to the quality?

What about Shrink should I maybe shrink them ?

you have an UNCOMPRESSED .avi that is why, and shrink won't help you here, not yet. try one of those 8 pieces in virtualdub compressing to divx or xvid and see the quality. compress the audio to something like LAMEmp3 too--it won't take that long. the outcome should be quite good.

lol. my software is very poor and the only way i get anything i can live with is basic mpeg-1. using anything else produces jerky playback (dropped frames like you say)

How I capture from my camcorder or VCR

I use a ATI All-In-Wonder card (PCI version)
Pinnacle Studio 10, capture as mpeg-2
use Sony DVD Architect to make menus
DVD Rebuilder to shrink it and run filters.

Thnx Columbo and ajp for ur info.
@ajp,AFAIK,capturing in mpeg(1 or 2) is not advised if u want to edit ur video. They get degraded easily.AVI is more resillient to degradation. This is my reason to capture in AVI.What do u say?
