Distorted picture when files are burnt onto a DVD

I’m having major issues with certain avi files; they seem to be Xivid and H.264/MKV files. I’ll start with the playback or lack thereof of some DVD’s I burn to play on my stand alone player that’s connected to my TV . Most of these files play fine on my computer with DivX Plus and WMP but once I burn them to a DVD (as avi files) only half of the picture shows, the bottom half of the screen is the garbled background the DVD player shows when there isn’t a disk in it. Now some of these files have been converted from Xvid or MKV to Avi because of the problem with the Divx player not playing some Xvid files. I don’t think this factors in though because some of them played fine before I burned them. I’ll go into the Divx player problem in another post.
I tried burning at the slowest speed, converting, and asking (in a post) if anyone else had this problem with the same file ( they didn’t) the only thing I ever got to work was converting to a DVD (VOB) file. I’m thinking it may be something to do with the output resolution (screen size) but I have noticed that files that played fine on the DVD player hooked to my flat screen have been of various sizes. I use Spamsoft for most of my conversions, but I have also tried using the Divx converter, and VDub but with VDub I have had a 1gb file become 90.1 gb’s! but that’s a whole other story, if ya can’t tell I’m wayyyy new at this stuff. I hope this is enough information, thanks for any advice you may have to get me on track. Here is the format info on one of the files that when burned and played on my stand alone shows only half a screen ( the tv is set on widescreen)

    Format: Divx 6.9.2 YV12 Decoder DX50

I also get this audio error message on some of the files, but it really hasn’t been an issue..yet!
AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is non-standard and you may encounter sync errors up to 0ms when attempting to extract WAV files or playing in some players. If this is a problem, use Full Processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress the audio. (This warning can be disabled in Options, Preferences,
    AVI. bitrate: 128.0 ± 0.0 kbps)

Hmm. When compared the two files show some differences in 1)format profile 2)BVOP 3)Codec ID or Fourcc 4)Conversion program.
It is usually accepted that Adv simple @L5 is the most compatible format with standalone players.
BVOP is probably not too important.
You can try to change the codec ID of the problem file( from DX50 to XviD) using Fourcc Changer.
I prefer Virtualdub or AVIDemux as my conversion softwares.

I have Virtual dub and Spamsoft, so when you say to try and change the codec ID of the problem file do you mean to reformat or convert the file to Xvid? if so how about to Divx? I tend to use Divx and I'm having an issue with some Xvid files not playing on my Divx plus player, but I wanted to resolve this issue first. Also does this mean that the resolution isn't an issue?

Thanks so much for the help, I'm starting to get a slight understanding of how to at least use some of this programs to find possible problems. I had to edit this because I forgot, I just watched another movie that was fine and it also used simple @L5, I'm going to look and see if I have another file that had the split screen (for lack of better term) and compare it to the other bad file, if I find it would you like me to post it?

No reformat or reencode. Codec ID is just how a player identifies a file. Thus an XviD avi may have codec ID of DivX or DX50 or XviD(since all of them represent MPEG4 ASP). But a standalone may just like the ID of XviD. So you just change the ID of the file by using AVI FourCC Changer(link in previous post). It will just change the ID of the file as seen by the player.
                    More about FourCC here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FourCC

Also does this mean that the resolution isn't an issue?
Seems not. The problem file is 640 x 352 while the nonproblematic file is 624 x 352.Nothing wrong with either resolution.

Is there a reason for xili soft becoming xilisoft when I type it as one word, or do I have a virus or malware? thanks

Well I downloaded the fourcc changer but not sure were to go from there, I loaded the avi and there are two drop down boxes that contain mp41 mp42 mp43 div3 and DX50 once the avi is loaded, Xvid isn't in the list or are one of the things listed for xvid, kinda lost here lol, thanks again

This one is strange, I started looking at my avi files and it was looking like the problem might have been the codec ID being DX50 but then I found this one that played fine, now I might have converted it to divx because some xvid files won't play on my divx plus player on the computer, but here is the file
