    cross compatibility w/various mp4 codecs

Can you make a .mpg file for MPEG-4, analagous to the .mpg files that you can make with MPEG-1 and MPEG-2?

If so, is there a faq or a howto about this? How can I find out about frame sizes, bit rates, and audio formats?

And will the files be compatible? Ie., could I use xvid to make an MPEG-4 file, and would someone be able to play it on a windows media player that just had the Microsoft MPEG-4 codec installed?

    No.

If you are looking for a highly-compatible MPEG-4 compression format, MS MPEG4 V2 would be the one to go for. The use of its 2-pass encoding algorithm (in nandub) is highly recommended.

ms mpeg-4 is not mpeg-4 compliant (tough the name might make you think so)

also its allowed by the mpeg standard to place mpeg-4 streams in the .mpg container, but afaik there is no tool which lets you do this

Generally, use any "real" MPEG4 codec (like DivX or XviD) but stay into the ASP specs...

MPEG4 in MPG container... Does this really work ???

AVI is still the most compatible container for MPEG4 stuff, but its unfortunately not MPEG4 standard compliant...

MP4 as container would be the way to go then (MPEG4 specs wise) but till now its not "really" use-able (not much HW/SW support so far...) !!!

          its less than that
mpeg-4 in avi is simply one big hack

Should I really repeat the "Dont install codec packs, they are evil..." statement one more time ???

Hmm... Yeah !!! Dont install these codec packs coz they are evil...

But one the other hand, watch my sign...

For the basic stuff you need only the AC3-FILTER n' FFDSHOW !!!

For the advanced stuff, read up some more info to prevent trouble !!!
