Video stops, audio plays on

Ripped DVD to VOB files, converted to Divx avi file. Now, at a particular point in the video, the video freezes but the audio continues to play. I've tried in BSPlayer, Core Media Player and (sigh) MS Media Player. All show pretty much the same behavior, though with some hard crashes here and there. I've done the 'scan for unreadable frames' bit in VirtualDub but no probs found. I did direct stream copy to a new file in VirtualDub but the resulting file format is not recognized in the players.

I just switched to a new PC and this is only the 2nd divx movie I've created on this pc. The first one works fine - in fact, the avi rendering is amazingly fast (3 gig P4). I've made tons of avi's without problems, at least without this problem. Using all the same software (smartripper, flaskmpg). What could be the problem here?

Especially in light of the fact that you state that using VirtualDub to scan for bad frames resulted in, "no probs found", this makes no sense. At the very least, a "Direct Stream Copy" of both video and audio should result in a duplicate of the original DivX-compressed .AVI file, "warts and all", which should be just as playable as the original.

What version of VirtualDub are you using?

You might try re-ripping the DVD using DVDDecrypter (and reading the log file with an eye toward errors).

what codec did you use.

would it be divx5?

if so, it will hardly have to do with a virtualdub version or direct stream

I think I may have solved part of the problem. The avi file was on a firewire hard drive. I copied it to the PC's drive and now the video doesn't stop playing. However, a new problem has emerged -- see a new thread.
