TMPGenc ( author ) alternatives

i am trying my first avi>mpeg project using a trial TMPGenc + TMPGenc dvd author. I am still converting to mpeg-2 at the minute but i went to check out the price of licences for these products and the two amount to $140. Now i know that these r widely appreciated tools and easy to use but there must be some freeware equivalent to do the same job or at least cheaper alternatives. Also i have noticed some all-in-one packages for as low as $45 such as blaze media pro. Are these worthwhile or even comparable to the TMPGencs?
