"grey bar" appears at the bottom during video playback

I have two divx files on hand, and when I play them using media player (6.4 or 7), a grey horizontal bar will appear at the bottom of the video (occupying about 1/8 of the video). However there is no problem when viewing the same two files using 'the playa'. The grey bar doesn't show up when I open the files in virtualdub. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Uncheck view->captions in wmp
