Some help needed with VHS to AVI (DivX).

Hello,

I have a Hauppauge WinTV Go capture card, and it works well. However, I'm having problems accomplishing a goal.

You know how most of the movies you download in DIVX format on p2p programs etc. are 650 - 750 mb? Do you know any software that will allow me to capture video and automatically compress/transform it and save it into that format at the same time?

What I'm saying is, I can record an uncompressed avi thats very very large, but then when I try to compress or w/e it just gets messed up. Can you please give me any software I could try to do this with or any step by step instructions on how to create those popular "vhs-rips" as they call them using my capture card.

I would stick with getting the simple AVI's on recording since any encoding will be in software, draining your resources. Once the processor 'misses' a bit of input data due to being busy, it's a flicker or a freeze in your finished product.
I was so disappointed with the broadcast recordings on my WinTV Go I bought a Nova-t freeview card.
What's your processor/RAM/OS?

I've tried various programs and the only one that doesn't get dropped frames is MMC with my ATI AIW. Mainconcept comes close but still has a few dropped frames. This is with a P4 1.7 512 mg ram.

Is the WinTV Go different from the PVR? I recently bought a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250 and have had no problems at all with broadcast recordings, and it doesn’t seem to be dropping frames either. I've converted all the mpegs to DVD without a hitch.

Nevermind I just found a great way to do it. While I capture I use Xvid codec, and then later convert it to Divx and it turns out great.

And btw, I never had any problems with this card (WinTV GO). It's working beautiful for me.

WinTV Go encodes in software, PVR 250 in hardware, 350 decodes in hardware also.
I nearly upgraded to the PVR but found the Nova-t for about the same price so jumped straight to digital.
I still have the Go for viewing the OSD of my VCR.

It's weird having both cards running the same channel
I can't remember what software I was trying to use to record from the Go but it was long before I found you guys

Will the Nova-t get the digital channels?

The Nova-t does receive free-to-air digital terrestrial channels with the existing loft aerial split into the WinTV Go. I use ShowShifter DVB rather than the Hauppauge software and record to mpeg2 Transport Stream.
This requires converting in PVAstrumento into a Program Stream before I edit and author in TMPGEnc DVD Author. Only drawbacks are an occasional shift in lipsync I put down to a crummy transmission .. and the time involved transcoding/editing/authoring/burning.
